Here at R.I.V.E.R., we offer a rotating 2 week externship program for veterinary students in their 3rd and 4th year of veterinary school. We offer hands-on experience and training in our emergency and critical care, internal medicine and surgery services. On ECC week, students will be given the opportunity to shadow our senior emergency doctors on cases and discuss physical exam findings, come up with differential diagnoses, and discuss treatment plans. If time permits, they will have topic rounds and in-depth case discussions. Internal medicine rotations involve observation of any of the following procedures: ultrasound, echocardiograms, endoscopy, and some chemotherapy treatments to name a few. Surgical rotations allow students to shadow our board certified surgeons into exam rooms and scrub into surgeries to lend a helping hand when needed.
For each 2 week period, we only take one extern at a time to ensure you get a positive learning experience with as much individual attention as possible. Students are selected on a first come, first serve basis and we recommend signing up as early as possible as we have students from Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Missouri, and occasionally other states participate in our program.
The 3 main goals of our externship program are as follows:
1) To expose students to private specialty practice at a 24 emergency and referral institute that practices high quality medicine and surgery.
2) Exposure to a high volume of emergency cases they may not have the opportunity of seeing in school.
3) To aid students in determining if an internship is the right fit for them post graduation.
We offer 5-6 post-graduate rotating internship positions at R.I.V.E.R. and many of our interns are former extern students. This gives us the opportunity to get to know you and see if you would be a good fit for our practice.
If you are interested in doing an externship with us and you are in your 4th year of veterinary school, please e-mail email@example.com.
Thank you and we look forward to working with you soon!
**NOTE: At this time, we are not able to offer ANY additional programs for non-veterinary students or veterinary students not in their 4th year of school (unless your veterinary school requires formal 3rd year off-campus externships). If you are currently enrolled in veterinary school and would like to come to RIVER to see if you would be interested in an externship or internship in the future, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org and allow several weeks to schedule a clinic visit. If any future programs become available, we will post them in this section of our website as soon as possible.
