Image00013Anesthesia is required for many surgical procedures, which require the patient to be immobile, unaware, and without pain. Furthermore, anesthesia aims to minimize the surgical stress response. In addition to anesthesia, analgesia is often managed by anesthesiologists or is included in the considerations for anesthesia.

In North America, the American College of Veterinary Anesthesiologists (ACVA) is one of 20 specialty organizations recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association. To become an ACVA board-certified anesthesiologist, veterinarians must have at least one year of clinical practice experience followed by three years of anesthesia residency training under the supervision of ACVA Diplomates, have been accepted for publication of a scientific peer-reviewed research article, and passed both written and oral examinations.

At RIVER, our board certified anesthesiologist, Dr. Hendrix, works closely with your pet on an individual basis to custom tailor an anesthetic protocol that is appropriate, effective, and safe for your pet. You pet has the advantage of having a specific specialist addressing anesthetic concerns, which can be crucial in high-risk patients, while the surgeon is performing the needed procedure. This allows each doctor to focus on providing the best care to his or her specific field and that field alone at one given time.
